Book Review: "Daughter of Smoke and Bone"

Daughter of Smoke and Bone
by Laini Taylor

"Once upon a time,
an angel and a devil fell in love.
It did not end well."

Goodreads Summary: Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.  In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.  And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages--not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

Review: You read the opening words of the novel, the quote I wrote above, and think "Angels and devils?  Pfft, yet another recycled theme in yet another YA novel."  However, don't be fooled!  Taylor has reinvented the genre of angels, demons, and star-crossed lovers in this darkly beautiful and hauntingly entrancing story.  I quickly found myself so immersed that I was on page 300 with no idea of how I got there.  Thinking I had accidentally skipped a large portion of the book, I flipped back to realize nope, I really was that close to the end.  This is a testament to Taylor's talent.  She is able to so smoothly and seamlessly tell a story that you will end up tearing through the book while yearning for more.  I am highly anticipating the sequel.

Rating: 5/5 (my first five stars of the new year!)
